But there are a dozen or so “way-up indicators” that occur in sedimentary strata and some igneous rocks that can help the historical geologist infer younging direction with confidence. Knowing these way-up structures is a critical piece of knowledge in the successful interpretation of stratigraphic sequences in deformed terranes.
