The Proterozoic Eon, meaning “earlier life,” follows the Archean Eon and ranges from 2.5 billion to 541 million years old. During this time, most of the continental cores (cratons) had formed, and plate tectonic processes started. The formation and breakup of supercontinents dramatically disturbed the carbon cycle, leading to global glaciations known as "Snowball Earths".
Photosynthesis by microbial organisms, like cyanobacteria, completely transformed the oceans and later the atmosphere by adding massive amounts of free oxygen gas (\(\ce{O2}\)), initiating what is called the Great Oxygenation Event (GOE). Cyanobacteria were incorporated into larger cells through endosymbiosis, making the first eukaryotes, then multicellular organisms, then the first animals near the end of the Proterozoic Eon.
