- Minerals are important as they are the building blocks of rocks which give us clues as to an area's geologic setting in the past.
- The most important minerals in identifying Earth's common rocks are dubbed "the Big Ten" and are:
- olivine,
- augite,
- hornblende,
- biotite,
- calcium-rich plagioclase (anorthite),
- sodium-rich plagioclase (albite),
- potassium-rich feldspar (commonly orthoclase),
- muscovite,
- quartz, and
- calcite.
- The silica tetrahedron is composed of one silicon atom and four oxygen atoms arranged in a tetrahedron. It serves as the framework for the silicate minerals which are the most common minerals in Earth's crust. The first nine of "the Big Ten" minerals are silicates.
- Minerals form through cooling of molten rock, organic processes related to animal activity, precipitation from solution, and metamorphism.
