AI Use in Course Development – Transparency & Standards
In developing this open educational resource, Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools were utilized to support the editorial, design, and accessibility workflows. Specifically, AI was used for:
- Content Editing & Refinement: Assisting with clarity, readability, and structural flow.
- Content Verification & Fact-Checking: Cross-referencing geographic data and concepts during the drafting process.
- Accessibility & Alt Text: Generating descriptive alternative text (alt text) for maps, figures, and diagrams to support screen-reader access.
- Visual Research & Image Generation: Assisting in locating suitable open-source reference images and generating select illustrative visuals to enhance learning concepts.
The author reviewed, curated, and, where appropriate, independently verified all AI-assisted content. We did not treat AI-generated output as an authoritative source. The author evaluated factual claims, examples, recommendations, references, and visual materials for accuracy, relevance, accessibility, and alignment with course learning objectives and disciplinary standards.
We recognize that AI systems can produce inaccurate, incomplete, outdated, or biased information. Human judgment and subject-matter expertise therefore remained central throughout development. The author retains responsibility for the final content and editorial decisions in this resource.
Our approach reflects the growing use of AI across education and the workplace: as a tool that can support efficiency, creativity, and accessibility while still requiring critical thinking, ethical judgment, and meaningful human oversight. Using AI transparently also offers an opportunity to model thoughtful, responsible engagement with emerging technologies for students.
AI-assisted work was only one part of a broader development process that included faculty expertise, scholarly research, accessibility review, collaboration, and ongoing revision. The resulting resource reflects both the possibilities of emerging technologies and the essential role of human expertise in teaching and learning.
Copyright & Fair Use Considerations
We aligned with evolving IP policy frameworks, especially insights from the U.S. Copyright Office:
- The Office’s Part 3 report on AI model training highlights the importance of fair use analysis and restricts reliance on generative AI when it could replicate copyrighted works—our use was limited to non-protected, openly licensed materials.
- This cautious approach is consistent with guidance. that encourages transformative use, transparency, and limiting output that could inadvertently mirror protected content.
