GEL 53: Introduction to Geobiology is required for Geology majors at UCD. This course is designed to be fully interactive. Geobiology is a new and growing field with an emphasis on how life and especially microbial communities interact with Earth throughout Earth history. This course provides students with a conceptual framework for how environments on Earth have shaped the evolution of life and how metabolic and other cellular processes have influenced Earth.
- We only know life from Earth, which makes it difficult to define objectively. As scientists, we use what we know as a model, e.g. life on Earth. These readings help us understand what life is and how we classify it in the context of the evolution of life on Earth - with an understanding that it could be different elsewhere in the Universe.
- This section is in the process of being edited for Geobiology. Section on DNA, RNA... was written for this text. Editing of the DNA replication section is nearly done. The rest aren't.
