On the day of our fieldtrip, we visited several locations that all had unique sedimentary features specific to the location. Each site had varying sediment grain sizes and different sedimentary structures. For the most part, I was able to obtain sediments that were fairly close to their sources. If one were to examine the samples collected, it would be noticed that those from Bodega Head consisted of coarse grains of granite diorite rock. At the beach, various large boulder sized granite diorite rocks were exposed showing just how close we actually were to the source; however, at our last stop, the mud and very fine sands collected were far from their source as we know that aeolian processes deposited them where we stood. Keeping all this in mind, we do see a notable change in grain size. Those sediments transported further distances were finer and had a defined rounded to sub rounded nature. Many of these grains were from other sources visited that same day which explains why we would notice granite diorite grains or plagioclase sediments from Horse Shoe Cove.

With the Earth being covered by about 70 percent water, the Earths oceans play a vital role in shaping the terrain seen on any given beach. With that being said, each beach is shaped differently as they are ever-changing environments that are subject to spontaneous events.

At all the sites visited, one can notice that different wave energies affecting the sediments differently. Such forces shape the sediments that comprise each beach; therefore, each beach appears and feels different under our bare feet when on the sand.

Most waves acquire their energy and motion from the wind. When wind blows on the surface of an ocean or any body of water, friction created along the surface creates ripples that with added wind could increase in size; therefore, each wave is defined by the strength and length of time that the wave has been subjected to the wind. These two factors together can produce large waves that in turn carry vast amounts of energy that is directed at the coasts.

Energy carried by the wave is transferred when the wave can no longer support its own height and breaks. When the waves break, the energy is then seen being transferred into the churning and turbulent water known as the surf. The surf is either directed at cliffs or beaches where the energy gradually shapes the terrain affected.

On a beach, different grain sizes can be observed due to the different levels of energy directed at specific points on a shore. It is important to note how the topography of a coast is different depending on the wave energy present.

The three most important parts of a shore are:

    • The foreshore (the area most affected by the breaking of the waves; high energy)
    • The backshore (this region is only affected during high tides when the water levels are high and during storms; low energy

At the foreshore, the high-energy waves scour the land and affect the sediments deposited. These sediments are subject to constant collision and abrasion that in turn produces fine-grained sands due to the high levels of energy available in the region.

On the backshore, the low energy environment doesn’t have much room for shaping and reducing the grains sizes. Here, grains are less mature and vary in sizes. Fine-grained sediments can be seen but are mostly present due to transportation by wind; therefore, under the layer of wind-transported sediments, one can find coarser grains that have not faced much erosion.

Elements of beach topography/Elementos de topografía playa

How does wave energy shape the beach topography?/¿Qué efecto tiene energía de las olas de la playa topografía?

From the expeditions to various beaches, it was observed that different beaches contained different types of grains sizes.

    Salmon Creek Beach, CA:

At the Salmon Creek Beach, there was a noticeable difference in sand grains when it came to those that were near the swash zone and those at the backshore. Carried mostly by wind, we find that the backshore grains are fine to medium grain sized with some larger grains being found underneath.

IMG_0732.jpgOn the other hand, the grains at the swash zone were well sorted and were, in general, very fine to fine-grained sands. The continuous motion of the waves sorted out the sediments leaving in the low tide zones pebbles and other larger rocks (Picture to the right).

    Bodega Head, CA:

Other beaches visited during the fieldtrip had similar grain sizes due to the wave energies present. At Bodega Head however, there were medium sized grained sediments ranging up to rocks along the backshore. Here, the sediments consisted of eroded clams and shells to decently sized granite diorite rocks that were washing up on shower. If one were to look at the sediments in the swash zone, they were finer in size and were well sorted (Picture below).
