We also understand that it is difficult to grow crops without disturbing the soil. And when soil is disturbed, generally bad things happen. We have already examined how agriculture and gardening impact soil nutrients--we lose them when we remove crops from the field for sale. We have looked at how we have negative impacts on soil structure unless we strive to keep adding organic matter and provide a decent habitat for soil biological organisms. We have considered how manure is both a blessing because it adds organic matter and nutrients to soil, and a curse because it can overload some nutrients and become a pollutant.
In other words, we have seen how we will definitely alter soil's nutrient profile, its biology, or its structure simply by gardening or farming. And now in this chapter, we will explore soil erosion--losing the actual soil itself from a field. We revisit soil structure because we will explore tillage and compaction which have huge impacts on it.
Before we leave this chapter we inject some hope. You will read about the ways farmers and gardeners can blunt the effects of their activities through erosion control methods like cover cropping, buffers, and no-till. We also dive into tillage methods that work to minimize negative changes to soil structure. And we survey compaction and what farmers can do to lessen that in their fields.
