    Chapter 3: Exercises

    1. Consider the following thermometer set-ups. Which ones would correctly measure temperature, according to WMO guidelines?
      1. Your car's thermometer.
      2. An airport weather station thermometer, placed 1.75 meters above the ground in a white, ventilated shelter.
      3. You are holding a glass thermometer while gripping the bulb.
      4. A sheltered/ventilated thermometer on the top of a 2-meter-tall buoy.
    2. Why is the warmest time of day in the afternoon rather than at noon (when the sun is highest in the sky)?
    3. Why do clear nights feel so cold when compared to cloudy nights?
    4. Consider the following locations. Which one is most likely to have the most significant seasonal temperature variation, and why (consider their geography, latitude, elevation. It's okay to look up information about their location)?
      1. Chicago, Illinois
      2. Eureka, California
      3. Denver, Colorado
      4. Hilo, Hawaii
      5. Miami, Florida
