Hence, all species must meet two requirements. First, an adequate food supply must be ensured for each life stage. Second, enough individuals of the species must survive until they reproduce successfully. The principal challenges are
- Where to live
- What food to eat and how to obtain it
- How to avoid predators
- Where, how, and when to reproduce
In meeting these challenges, marine species have adopted an extraordinary variety of life cycles to take advantage of the various attributes of the marine environment.
