Written, reviewed and edited by members of the Canadian Society of Soil Science, Digging into Canadian Soils: An Introduction to Soil Science introduces students to the core disciplines of soil science (pedology, soil biology and microbiology, physics, chemistry, and fertility and nutrient cycling)—presenting the concepts and vocabulary needed by students just beginning their soil science journey.

The planning and development of this textbook were overseen by an editorial board consisting of: Maja Krzic, University of British Columbia; Fran Walley, University of Saskatchewan; Amanda Diochon, Lakehead University; Maxime C. Paré, University of Québec in Chicoutimi | UQAC; and Rich Farrell, University of Saskatchewan; and includes contributions by 41 authors and co-authors, and a small but dedicated team of resource people whose technical assistance was integral to the production of this textbook. Will Engle and Lucas Wright (UBC Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology) and Heather Ross (Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching and Learning at the University of Saskatchewan) provided invaluable advice and help throughout the various stages of eBook development. We would also like to acknowledge the anonymous reviewers whose expertise, dedication, and insights helped shape the content of this textbook.

A special thanks is extended to the Canadian Society of Soil Science (CSSS) and BCcampus for their financial support and to the CSSS membership at large for their enthusiastic encouragement and support. The French translation of this textbook (Introduction à la science du sol : de la théorie à la pratique en sols canadiens) would not have been possible without the financial support of l’Association québécoise de spécialistes en sciences du sol (AQSS) and the University of Québec in Chicoutimi (UQAC). This was a true community effort and we hope you find that this textbook meets the needs of both the teachers and learners of soil science in Canada, and that it is both an informative and enjoyable read.

Maja Krzic, Fran Walley, Amanda Diochon, Maxime C. Paré, & Rich Farrell
