This tectonic collision, called the Taconian Orogeny, resulted in an extensive metamorphic belt marking the roots of a mountain chain thousands of km long. As they were worn down by erosion, these ancient mountains shed copious quantities of sediment, which accumulated in neighboring low-lying basins (both marine and terrestrial).
