    Check Your Understanding

Q1: Compared to Washington State, is Pennsylvania’s energy mix more or less similar to the energy mix of the U.S. as a whole?

    Answer

Compared to the U.S. as a whole, Pennsylvania is very similar. Like the U.S. as a whole, Pennsylvania relies primarily on a mix of fossil fuels (natural gas and coal) and nuclear energy for electric power generation and oil for transportation. Washington on the other hand relies principally on hydropower for electricity generation.

Q2: Identify the biggest source of energy used in electricity production in Pennsylvania, Washington and the US as a whole?

    Answer

In Washington the biggest energy source for electricity production is hydro power. In Pennsylvania and the US as a whole, it is coal.

Q3: Is a greater proportion of total energy wasted in Washington or Pennsylvania? How do these states compare to the U.S. as a whole?

    Answer

In Washington about 2/3 of all energy is wasted. In Pennsylvania the percentage is very slightly smaller (65% versus two-thirds). In the U.S. as a whole the percentage of energy wasted is around 61%.
